Steps to upload firmware to a NETGEAR router using TFTP

 The steps below presents how to reload firmware onto a NETGEAR router that won't boot due to corrupt firmware.

Issues :

  • Router not booting up properly
  • Failed firmware update
  • Blinking power LED
  • Power LED is blinking/solid amber

  1.   1. Click Open Network and Sharing Center.
  2.  

    Click Local Area Connection.
     
    Click Properties.
     

    Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
     
    Select Use the following IP address and set the IP address like below picture.
    IP address => 192.168.1.10
    Subnet mask => 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway => 192.168.1.1
     
    Click OK to save the configuration.
  3. Now run the tftp2.exe file that was downloaded earlier.
    1. In the Server field enter the default router IP (usually 192.168.1.1).
    2. In the Password field enter the default router password (usually 'password).
    3. In the File field, browse by clicking the square button next to it for and locate the firmware provided on step 1.Do not click the upgrade button yet.
  4. Unplug all port connections from router except the PC you are using to upload.
  5. Turn router OFF for 10 seconds.
  6. Hold down the reset button on the back of router with a paper clip.
  7. Power ON the router while holding down the reset button.
  8. Watch the Power LED. It starts with orange color, and then will start flashing orange.
  9. Power LED will then turn to flashing green. Count at least 10 flashing green LED and release the reset button.
  10. Click Upgrade button on the tftp2 utility to do firmware upgrade.
  11. You should see a note saying “Firmware was upgraded successfully”. If not, you may need to repeat above steps.

  12. The firmware has been uploaded but need to wait about 4 minutes for the router to finish storing firmware into its flash memory. Once it’s done, you will see the Power LED will turn green and the wireless LEDs are both lit.
    Note: Please remember to change your PC back to “Obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically”.
     
The instructions consider as basic level of networking competence.  If you don't understand them, don't pursuit this without contacting NETGEAR technical support.
